Advanced Placement Training and Incentive Programs™
A growing issue for the U.S. is that students in America aren’t competitive in math and science compared to other many other countries. This threatens the development of new ideas, new products, new companies and innovation that will keep the United States competitive and allow us to successfully address challenges related to healthcare, energy and the economy.
The National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) has responded to this crisis with its national replication of the Advanced Placement Training and Incentive Program™ (APTIP) in math, science and English. The comprehensive approach includes intensive teacher training, support from master teachers, increased time on task for students in special study sessions, open enrollment that ensures broader access and participation, and incentives for teachers and students.
APTIP is the only formal, national program in the country that has produced sustained, significant results. In the last three years, schools that have implemented NMSI’s program have demonstrated a:
In 2011, teacher-training organization, Laying the Foundation (LTF), merged with NMSI. This new partnership results in a seamless continuum of training for middle school and high school teachers. LTF training provides content-based, teacher-to-teacher training in public schools and is supported by rigorous classroom-ready lessons and web-based resources. Together, the two organizations have trained nearly 45,000 pre-AP and AP math and science teachers.
By year end 2012, NMSI projects will have APTIP in close to 20 states, a tripling of the number of states since the inception of program just five years ago.
